Animal experts find approximately 1,000 bats in old Benezette schoolhouse building

BENEZETTE – Animal experts report that approximately one thousand bats are living in the attic of the old Benezette schoolhouse building in Elk County.

Because of that, the Benezette Township Board of Supervisors says the entire roof of the building needs to be replaced, and a hole above the window at the building’s rear entrance will also have to be repaired.

The supervisors are now trying to figure out how the roof replacement and repairs will get paid for, since it is estimated to cost between $40,000 and $50,000.

Bat experts from Punxsutawney were hired to provide the Benezette Township officials with an assessment of the situation.
