Farmington Township, PA – A 75-year-old woman was convinced by a scam artist to send $2,000 in gift cards to someone pretending to be from Verizon.
State Police in Marienville say they were contacted by the unnamed 75-year-old Leeper woman on June 7.
She told them that someone claiming to be a Verizon representative called her and was able to convince her to buy and send the card info for $2,000 worth of gift cards.
The investigation is ongoing.
Being asked to send gift cards is a very common scam technique, because gift cards are more difficult to track. This means the scam artist is less likely to be caught, and you’re less likely to get your money back. Legitimate companies will never ask you to specifically pay in gift cards, especially gift cards that are not from their specific company.
