District 9 High School Football: Week 1 Results
In week one of the District 9 high school football season … on Friday, the Brookville Raiders took a rough tumble to Keystone, 55-6. Bellwood-Antis outscored Clearfield, 28-21. Curwensville lost on the road to Meyersdale, 37-19. Karns City crunched St. Marys, 61-6; and Ridgway came up short to Redbank Valley, 32-21.
A pair of Saturday games included the Brockway Rovers’ season-opener in Punxsutawney. The Chucks shut out the Rovers, 31-0.
However, the DuBois Beavers opened their season Saturday afternoon with a 56-35 victory over General McLane at Mansell Stadium. Trey Wingard figured into five of the DuBois touchdowns, and more than 400 yards of offense. Wingard completed 22 passes for 374 yards. His favorite receiver was Jaxson Hanzley who caught eight of Wingard’s throws covering a total 212 yards, and included two touchdowns.
Pittsburgh Pirates:
The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies Sunday at PNC Park with a 4-0 win. The Pirates outscored the Rockies 18-1 Friday through Sunday.
The Bucs are back out on the road and will play their next four games in St. Louis. Listen for the Pirates-Cardinals pregame show at 7:20 tonight on Connect FM. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:45.
Altoona Curve:
The Pirates’ Double-A affiliate Altoona Curve managed a rain-shortened, 8-6 win over Reading Sunday. The Curve are off today. They begin a six-game series in Harrisburg Tuesday night at 6:30.
College Football:
College football kicks off this week in Pennsylvania. Thursday evening, Penn West Clarion is hosting Wheeling. Then on Saturday afternoon, Penn State opens the season with a home game against Nevada. Also Saturday, Pitt hosts Duquesne.
