District 9 Basketball Tournaments:
CLASS 1A GIRLS QUARTERFINALS – FRIDAY
Elk County Catholic 54, Northern Potter 26
Clarion-Limestone 58, Cameron County 21 Otto-Eldred 59, Austin 27
DuBois Central Catholic is the Class 1-A top seed, and had a bye in the first round of the tournament.
The Class 3-A girls will resume action Tuesday. Brookville will take on Cranberry, and Moniteau will battle with top-seed Karns City.
Also Tuesday, the girls Class 4-A championship will be decided as Clearfield plays St. Marys.
Boys Class 1-A matchups include Elk County Catholic against Cameron County Tuesday evening, while Johnsonburg will face North Clarion.
Tuesday’s boys Class 2-A tournament games will include Clarion battling with Port Allegany, and Redbank Valley against Moniteau.
The boys Class 3-A championship matchup has Brookville taking on Cranberry Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday, Clearfield faces St. Marys for the District 9 boys Class 4-A championship.
District 9 2-A Wrestling Tournament:
Clearfield laid claim to the District 9, 2-A individual wrestling tournament at Penn West Clarion’s Tippin Gymnasium Saturday. Led by three champions, Clearfield won its fourth straight Class 2A team title. The Bison scored 187 points. St. Marys took third in the tournament with 169.5 points.
DuBois High School Rifle Team:
The DuBois High School Rifle team earned two bronze medals in both the Smallbore and Air Rifle High School State Championship Matches held in DuBois this weekend. In Smallbore competition, Jackson Shaffer had a 552, the top score for DuBois. Shaffer also had DuBois’ top Air Rifle competition score, a 375.

Pittsburgh Pirates:
The weekend went well for the Pittsburgh Pirates in their first three Spring Training games. Saturday afternoon, the Bucs beat Baltimore, 8-2. Then on Sunday, the Pirates claimed both split squad games – 7-4 over Tampa Bay; and 4-3 over the Philadelphia Phillies. This afternoon, the Bucs are scheduled to face the New York Yankees in Bradenton.
Pittsburgh Penguins:
The Winter Olympics are over, and the Pittsburgh Penguins return to regular season action on Thursday. The Pens host the New Jersey Devils with the pregame show starting at 6pm on Connect FM. The opening puck drop is scheduled for 7pm.
