District 9 / PIAA Football Playoffs

Class 5A Subregional: The DuBois Beavers fell just short in the Districts 6, 8, and 9 subregional championship Friday night. Hollidaysburg escaped the Beavers’ upset bid, 25-24. DuBois quarterback Trey Wingard completed 18 passes for 234 yards and one touchdown. Jaxson Hanzely was Wingard’s favorite target, connecting with him eight times for 191 yards.

Class 4A Subregional: For the first time in 16 years, Punxsutawney has claimed a District 9 football championship. The Chucks upended Clearfield, 28-8, Friday in the subregional championship for Districts 8 and 9. The Chucks’ first opponent in the PIAA playoffs will be Oil City, the District 10 champs. Punxsy will play at Oil City Friday night at 7.

Class 3A: The District 9 champion Brockway Rovers will host Penn Cambria, the District 6 champs, Friday night at Frank Varischetti Field. The game will be presented live on Sunny 106 and Tri-County – dot – TV.

PIAA Soccer Playoffs:

Class 3A Girls – Anna Korney netted all three DuBois goals Saturday as the Lady Beavers defeated Fox Chapel, 3-1, in the Quarterfinal round of the state playoffs Saturday. The DuBois Lady Beavers are now in the Semifinal round, and they will go up against South Fayette at 5pm on Tuesday.

Pittsburgh Penguins:

The Pittsburgh Penguins failed to get a win in their pair of weekend games. Saturday, the Pens dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime at New Jersey. Then on Sunday, Pittsburgh lost at home to the LA Kings, 3-2 .

The Penguins are off until Friday when they will face off against Nashville in Sweden. Tune in for the Pens-Preds pregame show on Connect FM at 1pm on Friday. The opening face-off is scheduled for 2pm.

Pittsburgh Steelers:

The Pittsburgh Steelers lost to the LA Chargers in Sunday Night Football, 25-10. The Steelers are 0-and-3 in night games this season, and their overall record now stands at 5-and-4. This week, Pittsburgh will host division rival Cincinatti.
