District 9 / PIAA Baseball and Softball Playoffs:

After the first round of the PIAA Baseball and Softball Playoffs on Monday, there are four District 9 teams still alive and advancing into round two.

In the baseball playoffs, Clarion moves on in Class A due to the Bobcats’ 3-2 win over Serra Catholic. Clarion will face Greensburg Central Catholic on Thursday.

Redbank Valley still has life following the Bulldogs’ 8-7, 12-inning victory over Greenville in the Class 2A bracket. On Thursday, Redbank Valley will play Freedom in the quarterfinal round.

DuBois Central Catholic bowed out of the Class A PIAA playoffs Monday by a 4-0 loss to Eden Christian.

In Class 5A, the DuBois Beavers fell hard to Bethel Park, 15-1.

The Punxsutawney baseball season came to end Monday as the Chucks fell to Elizabeth Forward, 5-3, in a Class 4A playoff game.

Softball Playoffs –

In the PIAA softball playoffs, DuBois Central Catholic and St. Marys advance into the quarterfinal round.

DuBois Central Catholic nipped Juniata Valley, 3-2 in a Class A matchup. The Lady Cardinals will go up against Union Area on Thursday.

The St. Marys Lady Dutch doubled up on Mowhawk, 4-2, in the Class 3A softball playoffs yesterday. The quarterfinal round opponent for St. Marys on Thursday will be Bald Eagle Area.

Both District 9 Class 2A softball teams lost in their PIAA playoff contests on Monday. Cranberry came up short to Chartiers-Houston, 5-2; and it was Chestnut Ridge over Redbank Valley, 4-0.

In Class 4A, it was a close one for the Lady Chucks of Punsutanwey, but they fell to Hampton, 1-0.

Pittsburgh Pirates:

The Pittsburgh Pirates are home for their next nine games. The Bucs start a three-game series with Houston tonight. The first pitch of Tonight’s Bucs-Astros game at PNC Park is scheduled for 6:40pm. Tune in for the pregame show on Connect FM this evening at 6:15.

Altoona Curve:

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ Double-A affiliate Altoona Curve start up their six-game series in New Hampshire tonight. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05.
