PIAA Basketball Playoffs

GIRLS

Class A – Saturday – District 9 champs DuBois Central Catholic will be hosting Bishop Canevin of District 7, the WPIAL, in the PIAA playoffs. The game begins at 1pm.

Class 4A – Saturday – Clearfield, the District 9 champs, host Laurel Highland of the WPIAL in the PIAA playoffs. The game is scheduled for 1pm.

BOYS

Class 4A – Friday – D9 champion Clearfield will host District 10’s Grove City in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs. Tip off time is 7pm.

Class A – Friday – D9 runner-up Elk County Catholic will host Youngsville of District 10 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs at 7pm.

 

District 9 Basketball:

As the PIAA basketball playoffs begin, there are several Tri-County area athletes near the top of the district’s scoring leader list. Among the top 10 D9 girls, Punxsutawney’s Samantha Greibel is number 3 with an average of 19-point-6 points per game. Clearfield’s Sonny Diehl averages 17-and-a-half points per game to be fourth on the leader list, and teammate Eve Helsel is fifth averaging 16-and-a-half points per game.

Topping the boys leaders list by far is Curwensville’s Davis Fleming with an average of 26-point-6 points per game. Braison Patrick of Clearfield is number 3 on the list at 20-point-3 points per game. Maddox Bennett of DuBois and Kellan Haines of Brookville are tied for fourth place with a 20 points per game average. Wil Wortman of Elk County Catholic is number 8 on the list with an average of 18-point-6 points per game.

 

Penn State DuBois Basketball:

Both the Penn State DuBois men’s and women’s basketball teams have been invited to the USCAA Division 2 Small College National Tournament in Buffalo, New York. Penn State DuBois men will play their first tourney game next Tuesday against Bucks County Community College. Penn State DuBois women also play their first tournament game next Tuesday as they face Cincinnati-Clermont

Pittsburgh Pirates:

The Pittsburgh Pirates were one run better than the Toronto Blue Jays in a Wednesday spring training game. The Bucs beat Toronto, 7-6. This evening, the Pirates will play Baltimore in Florida.

 

Pittsburgh Penguins:

The Pittsburgh Penguins are in the midst of another losing skid. Pittsburgh has been on the losing end of seven of their last eight games. A western road trip for the Pens continues in Las Vegas Friday night. The Penguins-Golden Knights pregame show starts at 9:30, and the opening face-off is scheduled for 10 tomorrow night on Connect FM and Sunny 106.
