(LOS ANGELES) — Twenty-one recruits with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office were injured after being struck by a car while on a run early Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said.

Seven of the recruits are critically hurt, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Chad Sourbeer told Los Angeles ABC station KABC.

About 40 recruits were running together at the time of the accident, which took place around 6:29 a.m., while it was still dark out. Sourbeer said. The recruits were wearing reflective vests at the time, a sheriff’s department official said.

The driver has been detained, according to the sheriff’s office.
