Richard “Dick” Hetrick, age 90, passed peacefully at Penn Highlands following a short illness.
Dick was born on February 15, 1936 in Brookville, Pennsylvania, to the late Lucy Catherine (Boal) Hetrick and Frank Edward Hetrick.
He graduated from Brookville Highschool in 1955. He attended Clarion University for business. Richard married the love of his life, Mary Lou (Snyder) Hetrick on September 6, 1958. The two honeymooned in Virginia by Harley Davidson. Mary Lou, his wife of 67 years, preceded him in death on April 28, 2025.
He had various careers including the Hilton Diner, Pilsbury Flour Mill, and as a longshoreman before returning to Brookville to take over the family business, R.D. Hetrick Refuse Removal & Landfill.
He was deeply involved in the community through Boy Scouts of America. He was the leader of Troop #67 for several years. He achieved the honor of Silver Beaver, which is the highest council level distinguished service award given to adult volunteers by Scouting America. He led several trips to Philmont, Scout Jamborees and excursions into Canada and Maine. These stories and many others were recounted regularly by him. Dick was a softball coach for several of his daughters’ softball teams. Dick was a devoted member of the Brookville Immaculate Conception Parish and a member of the Knights Of Columbus. He was also a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a proud lifeguard at Walter Dick Memorial Park.
Dick was a passionate Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Many a tv were broken due to having shoes thrown at them during the games.
Together Dick and Mary Lou traveled to 49 states on their Honda Goldwing Motorcycle. The two were members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. One of his most favorite trips was to Alaska. If you ever met Dick, you would have heard a story or 12 about that trip. When asked how things were or what was up, he would either tell you “Meaner than hell and twice as ugly” or “Been there done that.”
He loved camping at Clear Creek State park with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, going to softball games and listening to his granddaughters recount their swim meet times and races.
He is survived by his children Richard “Brian” (Beth) Hetrick, Mary Jo “Jodie” (Tom) McKinley, Connie Weyandt, and Robert “Robb” (MeriBeth) Hetrick;
Grandchildren: Nicole Keedy, Kelly (Brock) Smith, Mollie (Ben) Nixon, Clint (Lynsey) McKinley, Megan (Shawn) Smith, Noah (Shannon) Hetrick, Sarah Hetrick, Levi (Jessie) Hetrick, Caleb Hetrick & Cody Hetrick. Marly (Jonathan) Doty, Caitie (Ben) Lees, Zach Weyandt. Great Grandchildren: Brett McGee, Ian McGee, Sydney McGee, Hudson Smith, Hayes Smith, Maren Smith, Ava Nixon, Ella Nixon, Evelyn McKinley, Annie McKinley, Isbea Smith, Olena Smith, Emerson Hetrick, William Hetrick, Aiden Hetrick, Adell Doty, Colbyn Doty, Jerra Doty, Declan Smith.
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 6pm-8pm, at the McKinney - d’Argy Funeral Home, 345 Main Street, Brookville, PA 15825. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Immaculate Conception Church, 129 Graham Street, Brookville, PA 15825, beginning at 11am and officiated by Father William Laska. Final interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Brookville, Jefferson Co., PA.
