The Importance of Cancer Screening

UNDATED – In continuation of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, health authorities are encouraging annual Mammogram tests.

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer for women, with an approximate annual 310,000 diagnoses and almost 43,000 deaths.

As part of an awareness campaign for Breast Cancer, health officials are turning to Mammograms, a low dose x-ray of the breast that can find any changes within breast tissues.

According to Dr. Suzanne Iorfido, Chief of Breast Imaging at Penn Highlands Healthcare, this test is an effective precaution to take.

“Mammograms are the most effective tool we have for detecting breast cancer,” explained Dr Iorfido. “In fact, mammograms are the only test shown to reduce breast cancer deaths because mammograms can detect cancer earlier, while it is smaller and easier to treat.”

On Monday November 11th from 8am to 1pm at Penn Highlands Life’s Journey OB/GYN, located inside the Punxsutawney Community Medical Building, will be hosting a free breast and cervical screening day for anyone with or without insurance
