Clearfield County, PA – The body of a man who had gone missing while canoeing has now been found in a river in Clearfield County.
State Police were requested earlier this week to check on the welfare of 52-year-old Matthew Birmingham from Cherry Tree.
Local kayakers had discovered an overturned canoe, along with Birmingham’s fishing license, fishing equipment, and camping equipment while they were on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in Bell Township.
That river is eventually where crews found Birmingham’s body.
He had launched his canoe around 3 p.m. in Cherry Tree on Tuesday. His body was found Tuesday evening, around 7:10.
The body was identified as Birmingham, and the Clearfield County Coroner pronounced him dead.
Thank you to all those who assisted with the search efforts, including State Police, fire companies from Cherry Tree, Elk County, Central, and Linsay, the Pine Creek Search and Rescue Team, K-9 Response Team of Clearfield County, and the PA State Fish and Boat Commission.
