Sigel, PA – A Jefferson County woman was scammed out of $1,700 when a fraudulent caller convinced her that her Apple Cloud Account had been hacked and needed to be upgraded.

The 61-year-old woman from Sigel got a call from someone claiming to be from the Apple Fraud Department on Sunday, Sept. 13. The woman was told that her account was hacked and she would need to send Google Play gift cards to upgrade her account and fix the problem.

The caller persuaded the woman to buy three Google Play gift cards and provide him with the corresponding numbers for each card. In total, she lost $1,700.

As always, be suspicious of any phone call you get from a business that you yourself didn’t initiate, especially if they are asking you for money. A legitimate business will never ask you to pay in gift cards.

In these cases, it’s very unusual to be able to get any of the money back if you have purchased gift cards and given them to someone.
