Washington Township, PA – Five people from Rhode Island are recovering from injuries after a crash in a construction zone on Interstate 80 in Jefferson County.

It happened at mile marker 87.5 on I-80 in Washington Township around 10:15 p.m. on Aug. 1.

Police say it started when a truck driver, 32-year-old William Donley from Julian, PA, pulled out of the left lane, which was the lane that was closed for construction in the area.

This caused the Cadillac Escalade in the other lane to have to swerve. 42-year-old Felix Fernandes from Lincoln, RI, swerved into the left lane to avoid hitting the Mack truck that had pulled in front of him.

Unfortunately, although he missed the first truck, he struck another parked tractor-trailer in that lane.

The driver of the Cadillac and all of the passengers were injured.

Felix Fernandes and his front-seat passenger, 41-year-old Jackie Fernandes from Lincoln, RI, both had serious injuries. Felix was taken to Penn Highlands DuBois, but Jackie had to be taken to UPMC Altoona.

A backseat passenger, 23-year-old Taylor Duarte from Pawtucket, RI, had possible injuries and was taken to Penn Highlands DuBois. Two other passengers, a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy, also had possible injuries and were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Everyone involved had been wearing their seat belts.
