Pennsylvania – Having a cookout this weekend and you’re short on time? If all you’ve got are some frozen hamburgers in the freezer, don’t despair! Although fresh meat will make for better burgers, there are a few tips to make the frozen burgers turn out better.
Janell Goodwin with the US Agriculture Department’s Meat and Poultry Hotline says you absolutely can use frozen burgers… but you’ll need to cook them a little differently.
First, don’t put the burger right against the flame. If you’re cooking them over the grill, make sure to place the patty slightly farther away from the direct flames.
Then, after the burger has had time to cook away from the flame, you can move it more toward the middle of the grill.
If you don’t thaw out the burger beforehand, remember that it will take about twice as long to cook. The safe internal temperature should be 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
