Washington Township, PA – A Jefferson County man was killed Tuesday night in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 80.

The two tractor-trailers and the pickup that were involved in the crash had all been driving around 9:30 p.m. near mile marker 95 in Washington Township, in the section right before the roadwork.

70-year-old David Wood of Winfield, Illinois, was driving his tractor-trailer ahead of the other vehicles, but he had slowed down because of a backlog of traffic from the construction zone ahead.

52-year-old Scott Smith of Punxsutawney was driving behind him in a pickup truck. 55-year-old Samuel Addo of Joliet, Illinois, was driving behind Smith.

Police say both Addo and Smith were approaching at a faster speed than Wood.

Addo, the second tractor-trailer driver, was unable to slow down in time. He struck the back of Smith’s pickup, causing it to spin and strike the back of the other tractor-trailer.

Although Smith was extricated from the vehicle, he later succumbed to his injuries while EMS and fire crews were performing life-saving measures.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Addo suffered minor injuries but refused medical treatment. Wood was not injured. All three drivers were using seatbelts.

Addo has been cited for careless driving.

The family of Scott Smith will hold a private funeral service, under the direction of the McCabe Funeral Home in Punxsutawney.
