Winslow Township, PA – A Sykesville man faces charges for allegedly starting a fire at a Jefferson County home and then lying to police about it.

The fire started at a home along Route 322 in Winslow Township on Monday, and 30-year-old Samuel Jerrell was at the scene whenever crews arrived just before 3 p.m.

Police say Jerrell lied to fire crews about how the flames started, and he later provided a false statement to the fire marshal.  The investigators found that the claims Jerrell had made were scientifically impossible.

Jerrell later confessed to lighting the home on fire using gasoline and other materials found in the basement of the home.

No injuries were reported, but damage is estimated at $220,000. Police do not say the motive behind the crime. Jerrell has been charged with arson, criminal mischief, and recklessly endangering another person.
