(LOS ANGELES) — Avengers: Endgame’s opening weekend was nothing short of epic. The 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe delivered an estimated $1.2 billion worldwide in its first five days of release — the first film in history to top $1 billion in its opening weekend, easily topping the previous record holder, Avengers: Infinity War, which earned $640.5 million over the same period a year ago.
In the U.S., Endgame delivered an estimated $350 million from Friday through Sunday — nearly $93 million better than the previous record, also held by Infinity War.
The three-hour runtime didn’t scare away audiences overseas, either. The film, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner, banked an estimated $859 million.
Additionally, Endgame logged the largest April opening, spring opening and PG-13 opening, previously held by its predecessor, along with a number of other records.
Right behind Endgame, in second place, was Disney/Marvel’s Captain Marvel, grabbing an estimated $8 million. That brings its domestic totals over $413 million, and past Wonder Woman, to become the ninth largest superhero release all-time here in the states. It’s worldwide tally now stands at $1.11 billion.
Disney is the parent company of Marvel and ABC News.
Last weekend’s number one film, the horror flick La Llorona, dropped to third place in its second week of release with an estimated $7.5 million, followed by the faith-based drama Breakthrough, in fourth place with an estimated $6.3 million.
Rounding out the top five was Shazam!, delivering an estimated $5.5 million.
