Punxsutawney, PA – A Jefferson County man was arrested for allegedly assaulting and raping a woman.

A 36-year-old Punxsutawney woman says that, around 5 p.m. Friday afternoon, she was in a car with 33-year-old Shawn Smith of Punxsutawney when he began to drive recklessly.

He reportedly threatened her and told her that “they were both going to die this evening.”

The woman says she attempted to get out of the car but Smith allegedly “grabbed her by the throat and tried to break her neck.”

He drove to his father’s house on Timber Lane in Young Township, where the victim says he took her to the basement and threatened her with a shotgun.

The victim told police that Smith also continued to strangle her while forcefully sexually assaulting her.

The woman was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and underwent a sexual assault evaluation. Police were able to get a search warrant for the father’s house and arrested Smith as he tried to flee the home.

Smith is lodged in the Jefferson County Jail on multiple state parole warrants.

He faces charges of rape, aggravated assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, strangulation, persons not to possess a firearm, terroristic threats, unlawful restraint, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and indecent assault.

Smith is still awaiting arraignment.
