Pennsylvania – People across the country honoring and remembering civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. today, as well as reflecting on how his teachings are still needed today.

King was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968. Born in Atlanta, King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience.

He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 at the age of 39.

In observance of MLK Day, the US Postal Service is closed and no mail will be delivered or picked up. Driver’s license centers are also closed, along with federal banks and even the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq.
