Pennsylvania – If you’re already thinking about your New Year’s Resolutions and you’ve decided to lose weight in 2019, we have some tips.
ABC News Chief and Health Editor Dr. Richard Besser has some advice for getting healthier, making your health resolution, and sticking with it.
Start small. The top tip is don’t bite off more than you can chew so think of small changes that you can make in your life that are liveable because those things you’re more likely to stick with. If you try and change too much, you’re going to give it up by the end of next week.
Start with just a month. Instead of planning on doing something for the entire year, promise to do something for just a month. Allow your goal to be flexible. You might find that you might need to tweak your resolution just a little once you get started.
Give yourself a realistic, measurable goal. Don’t just say “I’m going to get healthier this year.” Instead, give yourself something that you can count or track. For example, “I am going to eat at least three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit each day.” Or if you’re tracking the number of pounds you want to lose, make sure it’s a realistic number. Break it down into how many pounds you would like to lose per month instead of overall.
Exercise like a kid. Spend time outside each day. We always say to kids go out and play but you never say that to an adult… but we should go out and play. It doesn’t have to feel like exercise! Grab a ball, borrow a kid if you don’t have one, go to the park, use your body! It’s good for you.
Let failure stop you from continuing. It’s not all or nothing. You are going to slip up eventually… and that’s fine! If you mess up on your diet, just look at it as evidence that you are trying to make a change in your life.
Don’t be afraid to begin dieting or exercising before the new year starts. The sooner you get into the habit, the easier it will be to stick with it when other people are already giving up on their resolutions.
