Brookville, PA – A former Catholic priest who had worked in the Erie Diocese for more than 40 years has pleaded guilty to felony crimes of repeatedly sexually assaulting one boy and attempting to assault another boy.

64-year-old David Poulson of Oil City has not been sentenced yet, but he could face up to 14 years in state prison. The victims were an 8-year-old and 15-year-old boy.

Poulson is accused of assaulting one boy more than 20 times at the Catholic churches in Fryburg and Cambridge Springs, generally on Sundays after the victim had served as an altar boy.

Poulson is also accused of assaulting this victim and attempting to assault a second boy at a remote hunting cabin in Jefferson County, where he took the boys to watch scary movies.

The Diocese of Erie allegedly knew of Poulson’s sexual predator tendencies since at least May of 2010 but did nothing to report him to authorities until September of 2016, after a subpoena from the grand jury.

Several priests with connections to the Erie Diocese of the Catholic Church – which includes Clearfield, Jefferson, and Elk counties – were named in the grand jury report describing decades of the sexual abuse of children.

42 offenders within our area’s diocese were among the 301 Catholic priests identified as predator priests who abused boys and girls while serving in active ministry in the church.

Read the full report that was issued in Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro was instrumental in releasing the report.

There are detailed accounts of more than 1,000 victims, but the grand jury believes that the real number of victims is likely much higher.

Priests who committed the abuse were routinely shuffled to other parishes, covering up the crimes.

Most of the abuse seemed to take place while Alfred Watson was bishop in Erie. He served from 1969 to 1982 and died in 1990.
