Brookville, PA – Two former employees of a nursing home in Jefferson County will be spending nearly two years in jail for abusing elderly patients.

Twin sisters Haley and Hannah Shirey, both 22 years old and from Strattanville, pleaded guilty and were sentenced 9 to 23 months in jail plus two years of probation.

In June of 2017, the Shirey sisters were accused of being consistently abusive towards at least two residents at Laurelbrooke Landing in Brookville.

They reportedly hit one man in the face, choked him, and pulled his hair. Hannah Shirey is also accused of pouring ice water down another resident’s back when he made too much noise.

The defense attorney argued that the accusations were over-exaggerated. However, the prosecutor maintained that anyone with dementia can be easily taken advantage of, cannot protect themselves, and needs good people to make sure they are cared for.
