Johnsonburg, PA – An Elk County man has been jailed after police say he fatally stabbed a man on Thursday night.

37-year-old Harvey Detterline III is accused of killing 29-year-old Richard Hicks at a home in Johnsonburg.

Police were called to the home along Water Street Extension around 11:30 Thursday night after people in the apartment complex were heard yelling that someone had died.

When police arrived, Detterline reportedly immediately put his hands behind his back and said he knew he would be going to jail because he had stabbed a man.

That man was Hicks, who was found lying facedown in the apartment. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detterline had reportedly been visiting a woman in the apartment when her boyfriend, Hicks, came in through the upstairs window. That’s when Detterline confronted Hicks and ultimately stabbed him.

The woman’s small children were also in the apartment at the time but were unharmed.

Detterline is being charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault. He is being held in the Elk County Prison after being denied bail.

The family of Richard Hicks has set up a GoFundMe page for assistance with funeral costs.
