DuBois, PA – Remember, you can make a difference for local hungry families just by participating in this weekend’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive!
It’s a national drive held each year by the Letter Carriers Association of the United States.
All you have to do is put out any non-perishable food items that you’d like to donate in a bag by your mailbox on Saturday, May 12.
Because there is rain in the forecast, you’re asked to put the food into plastic bags. Please double bag them, especially if they are heavy.
Letter carriers and volunteers will collect the food during your normal mail pickup time on Saturday.
Brad Waddell, the drive coordinator for the DuBois area (and also our local letter carrier who delivers to our radio station), says even small donations add up, as long as enough people participate.
Listen to the full interview with Brad Waddell.
All the food donated in the DuBois area will go to the DuBois Ministerial Food Bank, and the donations will be used by local people who need a little extra help.
Last year, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive brought in more than 5,000 pounds of food for the local food bank. However, it only filled the shelves for a few months.
Examples of useful donations:
** Canned goods – vegetables, fruits, but especially canned meats
** The staples – pasta, pasta sauce, rice, powdered mashed potatoes, powdered milk, “just add milk/egg/water” meal kits… and spices to add to the meals!
** Kid favorites – peanut butter, jelly, microwavable mac and cheese, granola bars, juice boxes, fruit snacks, things they can make when parents aren’t home
** Treats – many of these families are in dire situations… being able to have coffee, a candy bar, brownie mix, mints, etc can be a nice “escape from reality” and makes things feel more normal
** Non-food items – toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, toothpaste, mouthwash, pet food, and can openers
A surprising amount of people use the local food pantries, so we’re hoping to collect even more this year to keep the shelves stocked a little longer.
This is a nationwide program from letter carriers throughout the US. Most communities are participating. If you are interesting in donating but have no received a reminder postcard by Wednesday, please call your local post office or ask your letter carrier about how your community is participating this year.
