Pennsylvania – The community is looking a little cleaner after the weekend’s Earth Day activities.
In DuBois, hundreds of people took to the streets for the annual spring cleanup, picking up trash, sweeping sidewalks, scrubbing windows, making minor repairs, and brightening things up.
But remember, you don’t have to wait until Earth Day to make a difference. Here are just a few things you can do year-round to help the environment (and your local community!):
** Bring reusable bags with you when you go grocery shopping
** Use a thermos to carry your coffee instead of using a new paper cup each time
** If you go for a walk, bring a small bag with you and pick up any litter you see. Even a few pieces of litter off of the roadways each day will make a big difference!
** Save energy by switching to compact fluorescent or LED light bulbs in your home
** Recycle your newspapers, cans, bottles, and other recyclable items
** Opt out of paper bills by asking each company to send you an email or text message instead. You can also stop getting as much junk mail by taking a photo of the junk mail and sending it to the PaperKarma website or app.
** Instead of buying something new, see if you can purchase it used or make it yourself
** Shop locally to support your friends and neighbors
** Wash your clothes in cold water
** Plant trees and flowers to provide a sustainable habitat for bees, birds, and other wildlife
