Bell Township, PA – A local man is facing charges for reportedly stealing from a Jefferson County home and then selling the items to a Punxsutawney jewelry store.
31-year-old James Smiley allegedly took pieces of jewelry from a home along Ridge Road in Bell Township in August of 2017.
According to police, he then sold the items to a Punxsy jewelry store on two different occasions. Smiley sold them four gold necklaces, a ruby houndstooth ring, and Punxsutawney class ring.
The jewelry store paid Smiley a total of $254. Once they realized that the items were stolen, they returned them to the victim. Smiley must now pay back the $254 to the jewelry store, plus any other fines that might be given once he is sentenced.
Although Smiley admitted that he had sold the jewelry, he also told police that the victim had given him the jewelry while he was staying at her house. The victim denies that she gave him anything and says that Smiley stole from her.
Smiley is currently lodged in the Jefferson County Jail, awaiting his preliminary hearing on April 4.
