DuBois, PA – The shelves at the DuBois Salvation Army food pantry are getting bare, and that can mean trouble for the more than 40 families who receive help each month.
People often are more willing to donate during what’s called “the Giving Season,” around Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, donations taper off at the start of the new year, but the need for food remains the same.
That’s why we want to help with a program called Food for Fun! Drop off your donation for the Salvation Army of DuBois at our radio station studios at 12 West Long Avenue and be entered for a chance to win Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, Waldameer, Kennywood, or Pittsburgh Pirates tickets! No purchase is necessary.
Drop off your donation to our studios on West Long Avenue to make a difference for a needy local family, and get the chance to win fun prizes!
Lieutenant Candace Horsman from the Salvation Army says the people they help come from all walks of life.
Lieutenant Horsman gives some ideas for what kinds of donations are most helpful. Shelf stable milk is always a good choice, along with things like peanut butter, mac and cheese, pasta, spaghetti sauce, canned meat, soup, canned fruit, cereal, and oatmeal.
The food pantry will take any non-perishable food item that is not expired and is in good condition.
They are also looking for some frozen meats and refrigerated dairy products. The Salvation Army can especially also use hygiene products for both men and women, especially travel size toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and other needs.
According to the food pantry distribution guidelines:
A family of one to two people should receive a monthly donation of two dairy products, three breads/grains, two vegetables, two fruits, and two meats.
A family of three to four people should receive a monthly donation of three dairy products, four breads/grains, four vegetables, three fruits, and four meats.
A family of five to six people should also receive a monthly donation of three dairy products, four breads/grains, four vegetables, three fruits, and four meats.
However, because the food pantry serves about 60 families per month, sometimes the amount of food on the shelves can quickly dwindle down without the important donations from people like you!
