Reynoldsville, PA – A Reynoldsville man allegedly started a fire earlier this month in the bedroom of a home where his wife and 2-month-old son live.

37-year-old Richard Sipes is facing felony charges for arson and child endangerment.

On Jan. 4, police were called out to the home on Grant Street for a domestic disturbance. They learned that Sipes and his wife had been arguing. He allegedly attacked the woman and set the bedroom on fire.

She struck him back with a fire extinguisher, called police, hid the baby, and put out the fire.

Police say the baby did not seem to be injured and was taken care of while officers dealt with the incident.

Sipes reportedly ran before police arrived. In a phone call to the wife later, he allegedly threatened to kill himself and “didn’t care who else died.”

Police eventually de-escalated the situation and were able to arrest him. He was later taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Sipes was taken into custody on Tuesday night and lodged in the Jefferson County Jail on $100,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 30.
