DuBois, PA – Nervous but excited kids and families piled into the DuBois elementary schools last night for an open house. With many students going to new buildings after three local elementary schools shut down, it was a way for the kids to get acclimated before school actually starts.

How are the administrators, teachers and kids handling everything?


Kathy Ginther, principal at Wasson Elementary, says they hoped to ease some of the anxiety of students who will be starting the school year in a different building because of the recent closures.


School counselor Janet Zimmerman says she saw more smiling faces than sad ones. She gives some advice for how to help kids get their new school year started on the right note.


Heather Dzikiy, a 5th grade teacher at Wasson Elementary, was busy greeting her new students.


But let’s hear it directly from one of the kids. Geno is starting second grade at Wasson.


Students in the DuBois, Brockway, Brookville and Punxsutawney Area School Districts all have their first day of the new school year on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Clearfield Area School District has its first day on Monday, Aug. 28.
