Punxsutawney, PA – A Punxsutawney woman will face the judge early next week after she allegedly let her dog die while it was chained up in her backyard.
23-year-old Darlene Hawk is facing two charges of cruelty to animals and tethering of dogs.
On June 18, Punxsutawney Borough Police got a report from a concerned neighbor about the dog. The neighbor saw the dog while outside cutting the grass.
The black Labrador Retriever was found dead underneath the back porch, tethered with a heavy gauge metal chain to one of the porch’s posts. Officers say the backyard was unsanitary and filled with dog feces. There was no access to clean water.
Another dog, a German Shepherd, was found alive in the yard, also tethered to the porch. The surviving dog has been taken into state custody.
Police say that, during her court hearing on Monday, Hawk will be asked to surrender all animals.
