Brookville, PA – A Mayport woman is charged with endangering the welfare of a child after police say she publicly shamed her 6-year-old grandson for wetting his pants.
Brookville police were called out to the Giant Eagle in Brookville on June 21 for reports that a little boy was wearing just a diaper and carrying a sign.
They found 48-year-old Rebecca Martz with the boy, forcing the 6-year-old to hold a sign that said he had urinated on himself. The grandmother allegedly told officers that she wanted to publicly shame the boy so he wouldn’t do it again.
The officer told Martz that the punishment was inappropriate, but she allegedly disagreed and continued to deny that she had done anything wrong.
Martz is facing child endangerment charges but not abuse charges. The boy was placed with child protective services for now.
Martz’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 17.
